El Indio has been produced by several family farms in the municipality of Planadas, Tolima, a rising star in Colombia’s coffee production. These families -some of which belong to local indigenous communities- have been working with their local cooperatives for a few years in order to optimize their farming and harvesting techniques, and master the natural method of processing coffee.
The AMUCC Women's Coffee Association in the Cauca department gathers 274 women producers from different municipalities. Around 15% of them have indigenous backgrounds with their own social structures. These women are relatively young, with an average age of 40 years old -which is considered low for coffee farmers- as the young migrate to the cities in search for better opportunities. Being organized in an association has enabled them to improve their production facilities, invest in their coffee-growing businesses and, as a result, improve quality.
We created this special holiday treat to honour some of the most underrepresented groups and highlight them as examples of resilience. The fruity and chocolaty notes in this coffee make it perfect to enjoy after meals during festive celebrations, brewed as espresso to pair with desserts, or to enjoy in milk-based beverages.
You can learn more about natural processing here. Read more about how to pull amazing espresso shots here.
